If editing texmf.cnf and regenerating format does not work it's probably  
an aleph bug. As Hans mentioned luatex (aleph+pdftex+lua+more) is the  
successor to aleph, with lots of bug ixes as well, so you really should  
upgrade. If the bug still occurs in luatex then please report it here or  
on the luatex list.

I don't know much about getting luatex working in LaTeX but Javier Bezos  
is a power user and might have some tips if you run into trouble building  
a latex format, or in running luatex on legacy aleph documents.
