Apparently \incrementnumber[footnote] only works for n>1. The following works:

Also, as I mentioned in another mail, it would be nice to have

\incrementnumber[4][footnote]

which would add 4 to the preceding footnote number instead of 3 declarations 
of

\incrementnumber[4][footnote]
