I've added:

\def\synchronizestrut#1% no [] parsing, faster for internal
   {\ifcsname\??ut:#1\endcsname
      \csname\??ut:#1\endcsname
    \else
      \setcharstrut{#1}%
    \fi}

(no [] checking)
