can you try:

        def locatedlocaltree
            tree = `kpsewhich --expand-path $TEXMFLOCAL`.chomp rescue nil
            unless tree && FileTest.directory?(tree) then
                tree = `kpsewhich --expand-path $TEXMF`.chomp rescue nil
            end
            return tree
        end

(uses expand-path instead)
