[NTG-context] References and formulae numbers in upshape

I also could not get things to work with \definereferenceformat. 
This is what I use:

\definereferenceformat  [doeqref]   [left=(,right=)]
\def\eqref[#1]{{\normal \doeqref[#1]}}

And then \eqref[tag]..
