Yes, this helps! 

But what are the sideeffects? When is the opposite needed?

This works.

This works, too. Where is this documented?

This is not working. 
Even an explizit

{\switchtobodyfont[8pt]
\startuseMPgraphic

\stopuseMPgraphic
}

didn't work.
